Greetings! Thought we'd pass along a few tidbits of news ... even with the snow on the ground preparations have begun for the re-opening of the Bryn Mawr Farmers Market. We are delighted to announce that the Township has approved the renewal of our agreement for the 2010 market season. The Bryn Mawr Farmers Market will again be open on Saturdays, from 10 am - 2 pm in the large municipal parking lot on Lancaster Avenue between Ludington Library and the Bryn Mawr train station. The opening date has not yet been determined, it is dependent on the weather and when the first crop of strawberries can be expected. We will of course let you know when the date is set - but likely it will be a Saturday in mid to late May.
We have been on the lookout for a few new farmers and producers who might fill some gaps in the market offerings, visiting the PA Farm Show in Harrisburg and scouting out other markets. We are hopeful that a specialty producer or two will be joining us - this is still to be confirmed and we will announce with the opening date.
As you may recall, local community organizations such as the Lower Merion Conservancy, Main Line Animal Rescue, Friends of Ludington Library and Friends of Linwood Park participated in the market last year, offering information about their programs and raising funds. Searching for something else fun to do in Lower Merion this spring? Don't miss the new Clover Market, opening Sunday, April 11 in Ardmore, and offering a real treasure trove of antiques and quality, flea-market finds. We know that organizer Janet Long is working hard to find some top-notch antique dealers and to bring another fun, open-air market to the community. We can't wait to check it out!
Lastly, the Inquirer ran a nice story with tips for finding and enjoying locally grown and produced food during the winter. It is linked here. We have been participating in Canter Hill Farm's winter program supplying dairy products, chicken and eggs - it has been wonderful! And when you are in Center City stop by the Fair Food Farmstand in Reading Terminal Market - lots and lots of delicious, locally-grown and produced food from a wide variety of local farmers is available there.

Laura - really looking forward to the opening of the Farmers Market. Even with the thick layer of snow on the ground, I can feel the early signs of spring. And thanks for mentioning the Clover Market in your post. I can only hope we'll be half as successful as you have with the Farmers Market. Here's to lots of fun, green options this spring!! Nick Normile, 17-year-old author of the blog FoodieAtFifteen, has been experimenting with sous vide especially pulled pork tacos, which he served at A Taste of Lower Merion last month. He is thinking that a table at the Farmer's Market would be a great way to make a little spending money (he shops there every Sat anyway in the summer) and to spread the locally-produced mantra.
